The Dublin Saunter

Today was our final day of our Scotland/Ireland tour! Crazy to think it’s already finished- we enjoyed ourselves so much! We spent the day in Dublin, the capital city of the Republic of Ireland.  We started with a bus tour of the city. We saw Georgian homes…

Home of the Lord Mayor of Dublin…

Christchurch, which Aunt Pat and I had explored last time…

And Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, which we got to explore this time!

Jonathan Swift, author of Gulliver’s Travels, is buried here:

We also drove through Phoenix Park, where the Dublin Zoo is located. The Irish President’s residence is also there.

Interestingly, so is the home of the American diplomat to Ireland, a gesture of respect and appreciation from the Irish people to a country that has provided strong support for many decades.

On our way back to the heart of city, we passed  by the General Post Office, sight of the 1916 battle between Irish revolutionaries and British police, which ultimately sparked an uprising that led to Irish independence. If you looked closely, although not in this picture, we could still see bullet holes from that event.

The last sight of the day was the Book of Kells, a beautifully illustrated copy of the four Gospels dating from the 6th century AD. It was just as beautiful the second time around, and the accompanying exhibit had interesting displays demonstrating how the book was made and decorated. After we finished, Mom and I had lunch at a fantastic crepe shop, did some shopping, then headed back to the hotel.  Our final act of the tour was a farewell party and drinks.

We loved the people we traveled with, and it was sad to say goodbye. However, Mom and I aren’t finished- we’ve still got Italy to go!
